Abstract

1436005 Tyre building machines YOKOHAMA RUBBER CO Ltd 30 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 36260/73 Heading B7C A tyre building machine comprising a radially expansible and contractible drum 12 includes at each end of the drum an assembly for supplying a bead core 27, turning up an end of the carcass ply 44 about the bead core, and stitching the turned up portion to the ply intermediate the bead cores. The assemblies each comprise two inflatable annular ply-turn up bags 40, 41 secured to a sleeve (16), 24 slidable axially of and relative to the drum by a piston and cylinder device, and a bead core carrier and setter 25 mounted on a casing 23 also slidable axially of and relative to the drum by a further piston and cylinder device. To enable removal of a completed green tyre, the casing 19 and sleeve 16 are retracted by piston and cylinder devices 14/15 and 21/20 to disengage sleeve 16 from the end 10a of cantilevered shaft 10. In operation, after application of carcass ply 44 and beads cores 27, the bags 41 are first inflated to force the carcass ply ends into engagement with the radially inner portions of the bead cores. Subsequently, the bags 40 are inflated and the bead setters are moved axially inwardly to facilitate stitching of the ply ends to the portion of the carcass ply between the cores. The green tyre is then completed.
