Abstract

1,149,723. Tyre - building apparatus. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 7 June, 1966 [11 June, 1965], No. 25303/66. Heading B7C. A radially-expanded breaker 10 carried by a transfer ring 12 is deformed radially inwardly to bring the whole of a continuous circumferential region thereof simultaneously into contact with a carcass 11. As shown the breaker is first expanded by its building former 13 into sealing contact with a rubber annulus 16 of the ring 12 connected by a tube 23 to a source of suction, the annulus 16 being itself held against a rigid apertured cylinder 18 by suction in a chamber 20. The ring is moved axially to surround the shaped carcass 11 and chamber 20 is connected to a source of compressed air to deform a circumferential region of the breaker into contact with the carcass. Tube 23 and chamber 20 are then disconnected from their sources of suction and pressure respectively to allow application of the breaker to be completed; chamber 20 may be connected to a source of suction to assist return movement of the annulus 16. The ring is centered relative to the former 13 and carcass 11 by pawls 29, 28 respectively engaging in a recess in the ring collar 26, and the former 13 has axially movablefingers 51 for centring the breaker relative to the ring. In a modification (Figs. 9, 10, not shown) the annulus 16 has four annular sealing lips 21 and is connected to three pipes 23 to cause the breaker to conform more closely with the carcass.
