629,875. Gas turbine plant for locomotives. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HUGHES, J. O. P. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34364. Drawings to Specification. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a gas turbine plant for driving a locomotive the turbine comprises two stage rotors mounted on separate shafts. One stage drives the air-compressor and the other drives the locomotive wheels through a gear box comprising clutches and alternative gears for forward and reverse running. The power turbine is kept running when the locomotive is at a standstill and to reduce the idling speed of that turbine it is coupled to a permanent load. This load may be the locomotive accessories, other than those for the turbine plant, such as an air compressor or exhauster for the brakes and an electric generator. These auxiliaries may be driven by a continuation of the turbine shaft on the other side of the gear box. They may be driven by a shaft parallel with and geared to the drive shaft of a gear box as described in Specification 628,453. [Group XXIV]. The gear could be as described in the above numbered Specification.
