[Classes 44 and 65 (i)] Treadle-actuated gate operating mechanism comprises a striking element which receives motion from the treadle and is adapted to make impact with striking surfaces rigidly associated with the gate so as to swing the latter open or closed. When the pair of hinged gates 2 is shut, treadles 21 and 22a project from the road surface and treadles 21a and 22 lie flush with the latter. Depression of either of the former pair serves to open the gates and to project the latter pair, whilst subsequent depression of either of the latter pair reverses the operation. The treadles are mounted on shafts 20 carrying cranks 18 which are connected together by rods 10 slidably supported in brackets 11. Resiliently mounted in blocks 12 fixed to the rods are bolts 13 which form the striking elements. The striking surfaces effecting opening and closing are provided by arms 6 and 7 respectively of brackets which are fixed to the gates. Initial movement of the rods, before the elements 13 make contact with the arms 6, serves to release a pair of hook-like catches 23, each of these being connected by a cord 25 to a block 12. The gates are held open by the engagement of their lower edges with resilient leaves 28. In a modification said leaves are formed with shoulders for holding the gates positively, the gates being freed for closing when the leaves are depressed by shoes fixed to the rods.
