Abstract

628,795. Piles. IONIDES, I. A. (Swann, P., and Sung, R. H. L. Oct. 17, 1947, No. 27845. [Class 68 (ii)] A pile comprises a concrete stem 1 containing a passage down which concrete is forced into a flexible bag 8 which extends laterally and forms a footing for the pile. By giving the canvas bag a suitable shape, the dimensions of the concrete foundation can be predetermined. The steel point 3, separable from the stem, has a central passage 5, communicating with openings 4, through which water may be forced to displace the material in which the pile is sunk. A tube 6 communicating with the passages 4, 5 has right-hand threads for its various joints and a quick pitch left-hand thread where it is screwed into the point 3. A clamp at the top of the tube 6 positions the tube relatively to the pile and maintains the point 3 in position. The flexible canvas bag 8 is contained in a metal housing 7 fixed to the body of the stem. The stem is provided with recesses 10 wherein slidable stop rods 9 with enlarged heads 11 at the upper ends, engaging the collars 17, are fixed at their lower ends in bushes 12 in the point 3. When the pile has been sunk to the required depth, water is forced through the tube 6 to form a cavity around the point. The water tube 6 is then unscrewed and partially withdrawn from the point which is prevented from turning by lugs 13 engaging recesses in the housing 7. Concrete is then pumped down the tube 6 and into the canvas bag 8 which expands to form a concrete-footing 14, the amount by which the stem and point are separated being limited by the enlarged heads 11. The water channels in the point portion are sealed by a soft plug 15 before insertion of the concrete.
