Abstract

407,769. Piles. BRITISH STEEL PILING CO., Ltd., 54A, Parliament Street, and HOOD, A., 181A, Adelaide Road, Hampstead, both in London. Nov. 2, 1932, No. 30928. [Class 68 (ii).] A concrete pile is made by threading precast hollow units on a central supporting pipe, positioning this in a bore, and supplying grout under pressure. As shown in Fig. 1, the bore a is lined with a removable sectional casing b. Precast' units c each with a central longitudinal hole d, are threaded on a tube e, which also is made in sections, each as long as two units c. The bottom section of the tube e has apertures m, and its lower end is closed by a plate f, with a flange g, which sets into a cup-like recess h in the base of the lowest unit c ; the walls of this recess have lateral passages k. During the assembly of the pile the lowest section e is supported by clamps p, which engage with the coupling.n while the next higher section e is joined thereto, and one or more units c are placed in position on hinged arms q attached to the head of the casing b. The weight of the assembled parts is then taken by the newly added length e, the clamps p are removed, and the parts raised until the upper end of the units c inside the tube engages with the underside of the newly added units. The arms q are then turned away, the parts lowered, and the process repeated. When it is desired to recover the tube sections e, all except the lowest are joined by right-hand threads ; the lowest is connected to the adjacent one by a left-hand thread, and, with the plate f, is abandoned. Units with their walls may be used for making the top end of the pile. In a modification, the units, Fig. 6, are made with a central hole d and additional holes t, and with helical reinforcements u. These units are assembled on sectional reinforcing rods placed in the holes t; these are recovered and replaced by continuous rods if there is sufficient head room. When the column has been assembled, the water within the casing is expelled by supplying air through the pipe e, Fig. 1, and cement grout is then supplied under pressure through the same pipe so as to fill all the spaces in and around the pile units while the casing a is extracted. For making a foot, a burstable container of, e.g. waterproof material, containing a cement mixture is placed in the bottom of the bore, and may be burst by using the assembled column as a ram. Specification 370,795 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
