Abstract
628,522. Chaplets. ROBERT, P. July 23, 1947, No. 19762. Convention date, July 26, 1946. [Class 83 (i)] - A chaplet comprises two nipples connected by an elastic device, one nipple 9 being fixed in the core or core-bar 4, the other 10 being of the same metal as that cast and being surrounded by an annulus 11 made of a metal which melts at a temperature between that of the preheated mould 2 and of the cast metal 5. The elastic device may consist of conical discs, 7, 8, the latter being integral with the nipple 9 and the former holding 10 by friction. The mould shown is for centrifugal casting and the bar 4 supports end cores, not shown, which make contact with the cast metal. When the chaplet is used in a fixed mould the elastic device 8 is located in a recess in the core. In use the part 11 melts progressively from its smaller diameter thus exposing the nipple 10 to the cast metal when near its setting temperature. To ensure that the cast metal adjacent the part 10 will be cooled rapidly but not too rapidly, according to the conditions of casting, the part 11 may be made of alloy, which absorbs heat in melting, or of a mixture containing aluminium and an oxidizing agent which generates heat. Casting composite articles.-The metal of the part 11 will appear on the inner or outer face of a centrifugal casting according to the specific gravities of the metals concerned.
