Abstract
826,340. Cores. DOW CHEMICAL CO. April 18, 1958 [April 24, 1957; Dec. 30, 1957], No. 12412/58. Class 83 (1). A core, which may be used in the casting of magnesium, aluminium and alloys thereof, comprises a sleeve of woven heat-resisting fibres having a coating thereon bonding the fibres together into a rigid form, said coating becoming friable on being heated by the cast metal. The sleeve, which may be of branched form, Fig. 14, is formed on a fusible mandrel, of, e.g., a low melting-point alloy. The sleeve may be of ceramic or silica such as soda-lime or borosilicate-glass or metal, such as stainless steel, copper, or tinned copper, and coated with shellac or a mould wash of clay mixed with sand or other refractory oxide or silicate such as zirconium-silicate. After melting out the mandrel, the sleeve may be further stiffened by filling with a free-flowing particulate material such as shell-moulding mix, which is then set by curing. After casting, the sleeve is removed by pulling, causing it to contract diametrically. The cored hole may then be cleaned of remnants of the coating by a solution of hydrofluoric acid, or by ultrasonic cleaning.
