Abstract
570,719. Mould materials. GOLDSCHMIDT, V. M. Jan. 14, 1944, No. 742. [Class 83 (i)] Moulds are made from granular olivine or other material rich in magnesium orthosilicate, substantially free from grains less than 0.15 mm. in diameter, and bonding material. The orthosilicate preferably contains under 13 per cent of iron calculated as FeO and the upper limit of the grain size may be about 0.5 to 5 mm. The bonding material should preferably have a specific gravity different from that of the granular material to assist separation of materials when making new from old moulds. Suitable bonding materials are bentonite, Portland cement, or magnesium oxide. The moulds may be faced with very finely-divided olivine &c. mixed with water or other liquid applied by a spray or brush. The particle size for the bulk of this material may be 'about 0.002 mm. and the thickness of the coating 0.2 to 1.0 mm. The facing material may also include some non-aluminous and non-calcareous refractory material, e.g. graphite, carbon, or magnesium oxide and a small quantity of gum, resin, or waterglass. Moulds made in this way can, after use, be freed from the bonding material by crushing and air classification. The moulds are suitable for casting alloys of iron with chromium or with chromium and nickel.
