[Class 97 (iii)] A hatching device is characterised in that a movable foot adhering by friction on the drawing surface is linked with the rule by an extensible arm which may be shortened by any predetermined amount by pressure on a lever provided with a press-button located above the foot so that finger pressure on this button acts entirely on the foot which acts as a fulcrum and adheres to the surface. The link 2 to which the rule or other drawing instrument is attached is connected to the foot 1 by an articulated triangle comprising the control lever 3 carrying an operating knob 4, a rod 5, and a micrometric screw 6 having a graduated nut 7. A spring located in the barrel 10 which is closed by a muff 11 draws the nut against a strut 9 articulated on link 2, the screw 6 being free to slide axially through the strut. The instrument is adjusted for the desired hatching spacing by graduation on the barrel 10 which are read against the free edge of the muff 11 and by the vernier on nut 7 which is read against an index on the strut 9. Pressure on the control knob 4 causes the link 2 and its associated rule to be withdrawn through the desired spacing whilst the foot adheres to the drawing and on applying pressure to the rule and releasing the control knob the foot slides over the surface under the action of the spring and thus re-sets the apparatus. The foot may be of rubber having a large area, but with a small contacting surface or may bear small points on its surface to adhere to the drawing surface without sinking into it. Alternatively, the foot may be mounted on a sledge sliding in a slideway which is secured to the drawing surface.
