Abstract

[Class 97 (iii)] A hatching mechanism mounted in the knob 3, Fig. 1, of a drawing instrument 30 comprises at least one foot 16 per. pendicularly movable with respect to the drawing surface and to a slide comprising plates 9, 10 and 13, the slide carrying a fulcrum 7 for an L-shaped lever 6, one arm of which co-operates by means of a stud on the pin 14 with the foot 16 and the other arm of which can be operated against the spring 20 by pressure on a part 4 of the wall of the knob. The part 4 is attached to a rod 5 having a stud engaging the forked end of the lever 6 and the lever 6 engages a ball-ended rod 18 which is displaceable in a sleeve 19 against the action of the spring 20 whose tension may be adjusted by a screw 22. A ring 24, Fig. 2, co-planar with the plate 9 may be rotated by lever 26 inside a guide-ring 25 and is provided with a gradually curved inner portion 28 against which the pointed end 27 of the plate 9 abuts in its released position. Pressure on the member 4 moves the lever 6 against the spring 20 and the foot is thereby depressed until it engages the drawing surface. Thereafter the knob and therewith the drawing instrument move relatively to the lever until the slide 10 abuts against the edge of the guide-plate 12. On releasing the pressure on member 4 the lever returns under the action of the spring, thus raising the foot and returning the slide until its pointed end 27 abuts the portion 28 of the ring 24. By adjusting the position of the ring 24 the amount of travel of the drawing instrument can be regulated. In a modification plate 10 is omitted and plates 9 and 13 are held in spaced relation under spring tension by a block through which the pin for the foot passes and in a further modification the lever 6 is restored to its normal position by the contraction of a spring.
