Abstract

627,887. Piston packing. DICK, B. Feb. 14, 1947, No. 4389. [Class 122 (i)] In a packing for a piston and cylinder combination a cup 16 of yieldable material has a base 17, which engages a pistonhead 10, and an annular lip portion 18, which in its normal moulded position flares outwardly from the base 17 and has a greater diameter than the cylinder bore for which it is intended, the lip portion having a narrow peripheral surface 22 between its ends for engagement with a cylinder wall 11. The lip portion 18 is pressed against the piston head by a spring 32 and a retainer 24 which fits in the cup and has a guide portion 25 in the cylinder. In an alternative arrangement the retainer 24 and spring 32 are omitted and the base of the cup 16 is flat and abuts the piston head 10.
