Abstract
627,229. Cooling radiators for aircraft. BURGESS, A. F. (Young Radiator Co.). Aug. 16, 1946, No. 24422. '[Class 64(iii)] A heat exchanger of the kind in which radially spaced parallel tubes are bonded together at their ends to form a core unit which is then sealed within a housing has an annular ring 17, Fig. 3, which is bonded to each end of the core unit formed by the tubes 8, the outside diameter of each ring 17 being such that it will telescope into the open-ended housing 9 which has outwardlyextending peripheral flanges 12 formed at each end. Annular members 21 are provided, having flanges 24 corresponding to the flanges 12 on the housing 9 and the sealing means at each end of the heat exchanger comprises a packing element 22 of rubber or comparable material located between the flanges 12 and 24 and a clamping ring 23 of U-shaped cross-section arranged to embrace the flanges 12 and 24 to compress the packing element 22 between them, forming a fluid-tight joint. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the core unit is formed in two semi-cylindrical portions 7<SP>1</SP> separated by an internal warm-up chamber comprising headers 14, tubes 15 and U-shaped members 16. Plates 19 are bonded together to each semi-circular core unit and are extended to form complementary flanges 27 between which is located a packing element 28. A pair of clamping bars 29 embrace the flanges 27 and are drawn together by bolts 30 so as to seal the juncture of the members 16 and the plates 19. A plate 31 inserted between the clamping bars 29 and the packing element 28 serves to prevent the packing element from being forced out through the gap between the clamping bars.
