Abstract
929,701. Pipe joints. Q. V. F. Ltd., and J. M. BRUCE. April 12, 1960 [April 21, 1959], No. 13606/59. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XIII] Each of a plurality of heat exchanger tubes 3 is sealed at its ends in tube plates 1 by an arrangement which permits both radial and linear expansion of the tubes with respect to the plates, and comprises, at each end of the tube, a sealing gasket 4 engaging both the tube and the periphery of the corresponding aperture formed in the tube plate to receive the tube. At one end of the tube at least, means such as a compression spring 13 are provided to secure and maintain the sealing pressure. The joint shown includes a resilient ring 5 interposed between the gasket 4 and retaining means which may be formed by spring clips or (as shown) by flaring the tube ends. The invention may be embodied in an air heater heated by waste gases, the tubes being of heat resisting glass.
