Abstract

626,960. Making cross-laid bonded webs. JOHNSON & JOHNSON (GREAT BRITAIN), Ltd. July 31, 1946, No. 22870. Convention date, July 31, 1945. [Class 140] [Also in Group IX] Cross-laid bonded webs in which at least one of the webs is carded are made by feeding across a web 40 which may be carded or a warp beam of spun yarn, a carded web 51, severing the latter between rollers 56 and 54 into sheets, the length of each sheet being equal to the width of web 40, and transferring each sheet side by side to web 40. The web and the sheets may adhere temporarily by entanglement of the fibres, but are preferably bonded by adhesive applied as a powder to web 40 by device 28. The severing device consists of two pairs of rollers 54, 54a and 56, 56a, preferably of small diameter which grip web 51, the pairs of rollers being forced sharply apart by a cam mechanism, after the cam has rotated a distance equal to the width of the web 40, thereby severing web 51. The transference of the severed sheet to the web 40 is effected by a platform which moves in a vertical plane and is controlled by a cam device. The transfer may be assisted by a suction device 162. The webs may be supported by wire meshes. Specification 468,629 is referred to.
