Abstract

A method of making compresses, e.g. sanitary towels and diapers, comprises introducing long and short fibres in air streams into a fibre-depositing zone which has a moving air-permeable wall, sucking the fibre on to the wall to form a web, causing the long fibres to adhere together and dividing the web into compresses. The long and short fibres are introduced into the depositing zone in such a way that the short fibres are situated in a central area of the width of the web and between layers of long fibres. As shown, long fibres (e.g. woolly fibres from rayon staple fibre waddings) and short hydrophilic fibres (e.g. fibrated wood pulp), suspended in air streams, are introduced from passages 5 and 6 respectively into a fibredepositing zone defined by air-permeable belts 3 moving around perforated drums 1 and rolls 4. The fibres are sucked against belts 3 and pressed into a web 7 by rolls 4 such that the short fibres are located in a central area of the width of the web and are enclosed by long fibres. The web is then passed between press rolls 8, sprayed with adhesive by nozzles 9, passed through heater 10 to cause the long fibres to adhere together, passed between heat press rolls 11 and cut into sanitary towels or diapers as required. Instead of applying adhesive by nozzles 9, the long fibres may be made of heat-sealable material or have been previously coated with adhesive. The web may be further coated on one side with a liquid-impermeable or -repellent layer. The rolls 8 and 1<SP>1</SP> are such that the web has a cross-section (see Fig. 3, not shown) in which the central area 7a is formed substantially of short fibres and the ends 7b of long fibres.
