Abstract

An extruded plastic film (e.g. of polyethylene, polypropylene) passing e.g. from an extruder is pref. heated to a plastic state and drawn between draw rolls. The drawn film is then converted to fibres by a splitting and fibrillating device such that the fibres adhere together and form a lap. Pref. the lap is deposited in foldes by a pair of rocking aprons onto a main feed conveyor which advances the lap to e.g. a needling or calendering device to consolidate the lap. The lap may also be consolidated by applying adhesive.
