[Also in Division D1] Strand reinforcement is formed by winding continuous lengths of strand material into continuous convolutions, gripping each convolution at pairs of spaced-apart points on opposite sides of the convolution, severing the convolutions between the spaced-apart points to divide each convolution into strand lengths, advancing these lengths along a path, feeding them into contact with additional lengths of strand material at an angle thereto or with web or sheet material or both, and bonding the contacting materials together. As shown, strand material from the bobbins 4a mounted on the spinning rings 1 is wound round the conveyer belts 5, 5a, 6 and 6a which carry it upwards (as seen in Fig. 1) to the rolls 17 and 18 which press cables 15 and 16 into grooves in the belts to grip the strand material. The strand material then advances to a station where each convolution is slit by cutters driven by the motor 21, one acting between the belts 5 and 6, the other between belts 5a and 6a (Fig. 4, not shown), to sever each convolution into two strand lengths each gripped at two points near its ends. The belts then pass over sheaves 23 which separate them to provide separate flights of parallel strands. Another set of parallel strands, extending in the direction of movement of these flights is introduced between them by diagonally disposed guide bars (one shown at 26), and coated with adhesive by the applicator 38. Two webs 32 and 33 are coated with adhesive by the devices 35, and all five layers then laminated between the rolls 30. The cables are released from the belts by the stripper wheels 36, and the product taken round roller 37 to be wound up. In modifications (not shown) the strand lengths are bonded only to a set of longitudinal strands to form an openmesh fabric that may be collected for subsequent use; the angle between the strand lengths and the longitudinal strands is adjusted by raising or lowering sheave 23 on one side of the apparatus to lengthen or shorten the path of one end of the strand lengths between the point where they are severed and that where they are bonded to the other layers; additional longitudinal strands are applied to lie outside the layers of strand lengths; adhesive is applied to the strand lengths before they are bonded to the other layers; the strands are bonded by spraying adhesive on to them after they have been brought together; and the longitudinal and transverse strands are secured to one surface of a single web or sheet of light-weight flexible material. The strands may be of glass fibre, nylon, rayon, cotton or wool and may be multi- or mono-filament, twisted, spun or unspun. The web or sheet material may be cloth, paper (plain, creped or embossed), film or foil. The adhesive may be an emulsion, a plastisol, an organosol, polyethylene or polyvinyl acetate.
