Abstract

[Class 36] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVIIIJ A fluid-tight joint between a cable sheath 1 and a member 2 through which it passes is made by a sealing ring 16 which is normally cylindrical in shape but which is deformed as shown in Fig. 2 by being pressed against the conical face 4 of a member 3 fixed to the cable sheath. The required pressure is exerted on the ring 16 by the forward end 15 of a ring 7 which screws on the member 3. The ring 16 is formed with a step 16a which bites into the member. and the engaging ends of the rings 16 and 7 are shaped as shown in Fig. 2 to prevent the ring 16 from moving outwards. The member 3 is extended in the form of a sleeve 9 over which the steel reinforcing tapes 10 of the cable are applied, both ends of the member being secured to the cable by wiped joints 12, 28. In another construction the cable is pro. vided with brass reinforcing tapes bound with wire over which the sleeve 9 is fitted. The sleeve is formed with an opening through which molten metal is poured to secure the sleeve to the cable sheath. In a further modification molten metal is poured through an opening in the larger end of the member 3, the metal running by capillarity between the whole length of the member and the cable sheath. The member 3 is provided with flats 8 for engagement by a spanner and a locking ring 19 may be provided to prevent movement between the parts 2 and 3.
