626,181. Making turbine blades &c. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. June 6, 1947, No. 15017. Convention date, June 7, 1946. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A method of making blade blanks or blade spacers for insertion into helical grooves formed in the blade carrier of an axial flow turbine, blower, compressor or pump, includes the machining of suitably shaped helical slots or grooves in a solid of revolution to leave helical ribs and parting off these ribs at or near their roots to form individual blade blanks or spacers. Blades 2, Fig. 1, are inserted into a number of helical grooves 1 to form a number of blade rings 3. All the blade rings have the same number of blades and there are as many grooves as there are blades in a ring. The blades 2 are separated by spacers 4 and are held in position by end rings 5 screwed to the rotor body. The blade blanks and spacers are machined from a solid of revolution 9, Fig. 4, which may have a central bore 10. Helical recesses 11 are milled in the hollow body 9, so that the root 21 and root neck 21 have the finished profile. The resulting helical ribs 12 are then divided circumferentially in planes 14 normal to the axis 13 and the separate blade blanks or spacers are removed from the supporting ring 16 by cutting through the bridges 15. The blade blanks can then be profiled in a copying milling machine.. The hollow body 9 may be of tapered form.
