Description

S. STRUNZ.
Grutching-Machines- A NQ. 138,953. i Patented May13,1873

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
STEPHEN STRUNZ, OF BIRMINGHAM, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOAP-CRUTCHING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.'138,953, dated May 13, 1873; application filed August 2, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN STRUNZ, of Birmingham, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SoapGrutching Machine 5 and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, which is a side view of my improvement, with the side broken away to show the construction of the dasher.
My invention consists in the construction of a machine to be used in the manufacture of soap, for stirring or mixing the necessary chemicals into the soap while in a uid or semi-fluid condition.
Machines consisting of a barrel-shaped vessel, such as is shown in the drawing, having a dasher of the prdinary construction, operated by means of a crank, as shown, have been constructed and used for this purpose, but with only partial success, since' they fail to thoroughly mix in the added ingredient.
To enable others skilled in the art to make Aand use my invention, I will'describe its cona, having a series of paddles or fiat radial arms, d d, placed in it, side by side, in a line which runs spirally around it. This dash er is operated by a crank, e, in the usual manner. At any convenient part of the under side of n Y the barrel a is a small opening or trap for removing the soap, closed by the sliding door g, operated by the lever h, or in any other convenient way. The vessel o is supported by the legs i t'.
The operation is as follows: The soap is brought from the boiling-vats, and introduced into the vessel a in a iiuid or semi-fluid state; the chemicals are then added, and the whole is intermixed by the action of the dasher, which is operated by means of the crank e, or any equivalent device.
The spiral arrangement of the paddles or mixers d causes the contents to be worked forward, and more thoroughly intermixes the added matter. When sufcently mixed the contents are drawn oft' through the opening of the door g.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A soap-crutching apparatus, composed of a cylindrical vessel, provided with an opening at the top and an opening at the bottom, and having within the cylindrical vessel a shaft with a series of spirally-arranged dat blades,
as described.
In testimony whereof I, the said STEPHEN
