No. 63.023. Patented March 19, 1867.

JAMES J. DAVELIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent No. 63,023, dated flfav'ch 19, 1867i antedated March 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
TO ALI/WHOM: 11 MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES-J. DAVELIN, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, ,in the State of Penns lvania have invented a new and im roved mode of eonstruetin Churns and I do her b y 1 p o 7 r y declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference bemg had to the accompanying drawings, making a' part ofsthis specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspectivefview of my churn.
Figure 2, a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same.
Figure 3, a cross-sectional elevation of the same.
, Figure 4, asection on'a largen scale, showing th'e, iron fixtures and fastenings, as hereafter described-- Similar-letters referring to similar parts allthroughout the following description.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing my churn in a barrel-shaped form, and providing it with two dashers of a p'eeulitiit form, which-are intended to revolve on fixjed points, but in contrary directions, thus causing the creaml tobe beaten more thoroughly, andprv-enting its swelling during the operation.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,- I will proceed to describe its construction and-operation. i
B B is the body of the churn, lvmade and f'hooped. as-any ordinaryi'lightjcask, out ofany suitable material, wood .orineta]. '1 I I i a N M'N and P OP 0 aretwo framespmade so as to fit inside the barrel or body of the churn, and so that the smaller will fitl'oosely inside the larger, as shown-in fig. i i
A shatIt, A, 18 made to run through the centre of one en l'of churn, and is fa'stenedon piece Nof frame or dnsher N M N M, saiil'shaft {is provided with a conical centre hole, 0:, on the inside. end, and with a crank-handle,
K. on the outside.
I The opposite piece of the same frame NM N M is provided with a h ollowhi asher, D D, faste'n.ed on the centre of said piece, and through which'runs azshaft, A;,' similar to the one, A, abovedeseribed, and which fastens,
as shown in yy, on. centre of pieced of small frame or dasher P UE O, shaft A passing through the end ofchurn,
and provided on its (shal't s) outside end with a crank-handlq K On centre of opposite piece P of smaller frame P O P O is fastened pivot C, resting and fitting easy in conical hole 96. I i I Holes 11 II, in suitable numbers, and'of suitable sizes, are made into curved pieces and-O b t flashers.
Lid L permits theintroduetion oftthe cream and extraction of the butter, andthese complete the invention.
Now, the creanrhavin'gbeen introduced into "churn throughlid L, if two children, or any couple of hands, revolve rapidly and in contrary directions, as shown in fig. 3 by arrowsa ad and b b b, the dashers N M N M and P OP 0, the cream :will" he so thoroughly and unee'asingly moved and in rapid motion that the globules containing the butter will soon be crushed open, coagulated together, and better be obtained in a short time, with scarcelyany-labor. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is I I The combination of dashers M and P O, constructed and held together by fasteningsA, \V, C, and D, with churn B, the whole combined and'actiug in the manner and for the purpose above described and shown. I
JAMES J. DAVELIN.
Witnesses R. M. HARTLEY, C. D. COLLAD-AY.
