Abstract
626,046. Centrifugally actuated clutches. MERCURY CLUTCH CORPORATION. Aug. 3, 1945, No., 20018. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] A centrifugally actuated clutch comprises axially movable plates 24 on a driving sleeve 1 having friction facings 27 which are moved into engagement with the walls 13, 15 of a driven housing member 14 by the action of centrifugal force on a liquid such as mercury contained within a flexible gland 31 between the plates 24. When the driving sleeve 1 is at rest as shown in Fig. 1 the walls 33 of the gland 31 are pressed together by a series of radially arranged springs 37 to disengage the clutch, the actuating liquid then being confined within an inner bulbous portion 32. On rotation of the sleeve 1 a time lag occurs before the inertia of the liquid is overcome by the frictional drag which allows the driving sleeve to speed up before the centrifugal force acts to separate the walls 33 of the gland as in Fig. 3 to engage the friction, facings 27 with the walls 13, 15 of the driven housing 14.
