Abstract

624,821. Belt gearing. SMITH, O. D. July 10, 1947, No. 18219. [Class 80 (i)] In belt drives for machine tools of the type described in Specification 558,665 including a driving motor 21 and a countershaft 25, the motor and countershaft bearings 28 are mounted on a framework which is resiliently pivoted at 37 above the system supporting pillars 31, and spring-held to tension the final driven belt. The framework is formed by two spaced flanged side members 10, 11 rigidly connected by transverse members 13 carrying the mounting 18 for the motor, and the countershaft and pivot bearings 28, 41 are detachably secured to the inner faces of the side members. The motor is adjustably mounted in slots in member 18 to tension the driving belt 23. The spring support comprises an adjustable piston 45 pivoted on one of the bars 13 and mounted between compression springs 47, 48 in a cylinder 46 supported through pivoted links 51 ...54 on the pillars 31. The machine tool is driven from a stepped pulley 26 on the countershaft, and when the belt is to be moved it is first slackened by turning links 52 through 180 degrees about shaft 53 by means of a handle (not shown) thereon, thus tilting the framework 10, 11 about its pivot 37. The system is adjustable on the supporting pillars by means of split sleeves 34.
