Abstract

624,581. Automatic - circuit breakers. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A., BESAG, E., HILL, W. E., and WINTLE, T. D. G. Feb. 19, 1947, Nos. 4915 and 22588. [Class 38(v)] A polyphase motor protection switch with a differential thermal trip comprises a number of bimetal elements such as those described in Specification 624,599, each having one end d<SP>1</SP> engaging between a wall f of the casing and a nose e on a channel-section bar a and the other end d<SP>2</SP> attached to a pivoted lever arm d which engages in a slot b<SP>1</SP> in a bar b sliding within the channel section bar a. On balanced overload, the trip arm h initially holds the bar a so that the bar b is moved to the left until it engages an adjustable stop k which may be a bimetal strip to compensate for ambient temperature such as that described in Specification 624,598, after which continued expansion of the bimetal elements d<SP>2</SP> moves the bar a to operate the trip arm. On unbalanced overload, the bar b is held by the lever d of the underloaded element, and bar a is moved instantly by the arm d' of the overload element to operate the trip arm. In another embodirrient with non-differential tripping, Fig. 5, (not shown), the channel bar is used as an adjustable setting stop for the arms d<SP>1</SP> and the wall f is cut away so that the arm d<SP>1</SP> of the unloaded element is carried forward on unbalanced overload; the delay being the same for balanced and unbalanced loads.
