624,957. Protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and MARTIN, E. H. B. July 17, 1947, No. 19170. [Class 38(v)] A thermally-actuated device for protecting a three-phase motor operates more quickly on the occurrence of an open phase than on a balanced overload. Bimetal strips 1a, 1b, 1c heated by coils 2a, 2b, 2c in the respective phases, have theirfree ends pivotally connected to two trip bars 3, 4, bar 3 being connected to strips 1b, 1c and bar 4 to strips 1a, 1b. On a balanced overload the bars 3, 4 keep parallel to the base 8 as they are moved upwards to engage a member 5 and separate trip contacts 6, 7. On open phase, the bar or bars connected to the bimetal strip of that phase tilt about that strip since it remains unflexed, and consequently the ends of the bars 3, 4 are moved through a greater dis-- tance than the ends of the flexed strips which move them, and the contacts 6, 7 are operated sooner.
