Abstract

624,497. Frictional igniters. ROWLES, F. E., and MORGAN, W. W May 2, 1947, No 11793. [Class 75(iii)] In a pyrophoric lighter the wick cap and flint wheel operating mechanism are coupled by a sensibly horizontal link 9, which may be of inverted U-section, to a pivoted arm 11 which normally lies transversely to the link and is provided with a part 16 which extends just proud of the link 9 and which is so shaped that it guides the user's finger or thumb along the link, and hence in a direction transverse to the length of said arm. The wick cap member 7 pivots about the axis of the friction wheel 5, both members being mounted in brackets 8 on top of the lighter body 1; the wick cap member 7 is raised by depressing the link 9 against the action of a spring 14. The wheel 5 is operated by a spring pawl 13 carried by the cap. The arm 11 may thus be set at a large obliquity, or even at right angles, to the top of the body 1.
