624,212. Variable-speed friction gearing ; locking rods. OSTERBERG, I. A. June 13, 1947, No. 15615. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] In a variable-speed friction gearing in which the driving and driven discs are perpendicular and the driven disc is movable only when the driving disc has been moved out of engagement, the driven disc is locked in position by an eccentric displacing a rod connected to the driven disc yoke, so that the yoke is only movable when the discs are disengaged. The driving disc 7 is mounted on a shaft 39 carried in bearings 8, 9 rigid with a frame 10 which is slidable longitudinally against a spring 24. The driven disc 5 is slidable transversely on a shaft 1 with which it is rotationally connected through a keyway 6, transverse movement being imparted through a yoke 4 moved by a lever 34 through a linkage system. The discs are disengaged by movement of the frame 10 through a lever 16 and link 15, movement of the lever simultaneously releasing an eccentric 21 in a housing 22, through the link 19 ; the eccentric normally locking a rod 23 fixed to the yoke 4, under the tension of a spring 26.
