Abstract

<PICT:0624129/III/1> Apparatus for making hydrates or sulphides of alkali-metals comprises an electrolytic cell A provided with a mercury cathode and an alkali-metal chloride, and a vessel B to which the amalgam formed during electrolysis is discharged, the vessel, in the case where hydrate is to be made, containing pieces of graphite or other material having a similar catalytic action and being fed continuously with water. The hydrate is removed through outlet 5. For the manufacture of sulphide, an alkali-metal polysulphide is supplied to the vessel B instead of water, and the packing is of non-catalytic material such as glass.
