Abstract

726,826. Batteries. McMURDO INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd. Jan. 21, 1954 [Dec. 23, 1952], No. 32609/52. Class 53. A positive electrode is made by fusing a mixture of cuprous chloride and powdered copper and casting the molten mixture in a mould. The mixture may also include a small amount of cuprous sulphide. In one method cuprous chloride powdered copper and cuprous sulphide are fused together in an atmosphere of sulphur dioxide and the molten mixture run into a mould which has a strip of copper gauze stretched across its centre so that after cooling the gauze is embedded in the solid material. The mould may be made of graphite, metal, ceramic or other material and it may be lined with copper foil which remains adherent to the solid plate after it has been removed from the mould. Before the plate is assembled in a battery the foil is stripped from its surface. The plate is used with a zinc or magnesium electrode which may comprise two plates 3, 4 which are separated from the cuprous chloride plate 1 by a polythene thread 2 wound round the plate 1. Removable plugs 5a are provided in the container for the introduction of electrolyte which may be plain water or sea water.
