Abstract

Chlorine and sodium are produced by a fused electrolyte process wherein fused NaCl with or without a melting-point lowering substance such as CaCl2 is electrolysed in the presence of particulate activated carbon, e.g. made from petroleum "acid sludge", coconut shell, sugar or other vegetable matter, pitch, lampblack or particulate petroleum coke, preferably agglomerated to the size range 4-60 U.S. standard mesh, at a temperature not above 900 DEG C., e.g. between 450 and 800 DEG C. The carbon is preferably maintained in the cathode region and in excess of the amount required to form Na2C2 which may be withdrawn and decomposed with water to form caustic soda and acetylene. A graphite crucible for containing the bath, preferably under superatmospheric pressure, and graphite electrodes may be used.
