Abstract
Phosphine is produced electrolytically in a cell having an aqueous electrolyte in the anode compartment, an aqueous electrolyte and molten phosphorus in the cathode compartment, and an ion-permeable diaphragm separating the two compartments, that part of the diaphragm which is exposed to the molten phosphorus being of a material (other than sintered glass) not wetted thereby, and recovering the cathodically evolved gas. The diaphragm may be of porous porcelain, aluminium oxide or resin-impregnated wool felt covered at least on the catholyte side with a phosphorusrepelling material such as glass fabric or a synthetic plastic or natural or chlorinated rubber fabric or graphite. The fabric may be adhered to the diaphragm body as by mechanical or heat action or may be formed on it, or may be a sheath into which the diaphragm body is inserted.
