Abstract
In the electrolytic preparation of phosphine using an aqueous electrolyte and a cathode having at least a portion in contact with molten phosphorus, the phosphorus is treated with a reducing gas to inhibit it from becoming highly viscous, and preferably to maintain it at a viscosity of 1.55 to 7 centipoises measured at 50 DEG C. Suitable reducing gases are hydrogen, PH3,H2S, CO, HCN, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon gases or mixtures of these. Preferably a portion of the cathodically evolved mixture of hydrogen and PH3 is recycled for passage through the molten phosphorus. The cell employed is preferably of the compartmented type described in Specification 1,042,391 employing a grooved lead plate as in Specification 1,042,392. The cathodically evolved gases are passed through a gas/liquid separator and the separated electrolyte is returned to the cathode compartment.
