Abstract
In the electrolytic preparation of phosphine in a cell employing an aqueous electrolyte and a diaphragm separate the cell into anode and cathode compartments, the cathode which may be of generally flat plate form with sharp bounding edges has a plurality of additional sharp edges disposed on one or more faces, preferably so that phosphorus wicks up over the whole cathode surface. The cell may be as described in the Specification. The cathode which may be of Pb, Pb-Hg amalgam, Cd, Sn,Al,Ni,Cu,Ag or Bi or alloys of these such as Pb-Sn,Pb-Bi and Sn-Bi may comprise a plate with deep vertical grooves, a plate with deep vertical and horizontal grooves or its complementary form, a vertically corrugated plate, an array of spaced vertical rectangular rods or adjoining vertical hexagonal rods, a plate with circular perforations or a plate with cylindrical projections with axes at perpendicular to the plate surfaces as depicted in Figs. 3 to 12 (not shown).
