Abstract
879,057. Perfluoro-hydrocarbons. SALINE LUDWIGSHALLE A.G. Feb. 25, 1960 (March 7, 1959], No. 6720/60. Class 41. Perfluoro hydrocarbons are formed by electrolysis of a solution in anhydrous HF containing a fluorinated alkane or cycloalkane, preferably the di- or tri-fluoro derivative, and which contains at least one H and one F atoms. A conductivity assistant e.g. NaF is preferably present. As starting materials fluor-alkanes or. cyclo-alkanes containing up to 20 C atoms may be used. In examples, 2.2-difluoro-hexane, - butane, or -octane is dissolved in anhydrous HF containing a little NaF, and electrolysed at 4 to 9 volts using sheet iron cathodes and nickel anodes. The cell is cooled with brine to maintain a temperature of 10 to 20 C., and a cooled condenser mounted to trap the vapours evolved. These were fractionated, and the HF returned to the cell. Products of respective starting materials are: (a) mainly C6F14; (b) C4F10; (c) C8F18. A diaphragm may be mounted in the cell to prevent hydrogen migrating to the anode. German Specification 1,065,397 is referred to.
