Abstract
Nickel anodes, or nickel matte is refined electrolytically using an electrolyte containing an organic cyanide e.g. acrylonitrile, acetonitrile, benzonitrile, ethylene, cyanhydrin or b -chlorpropionitrile. The nickel is preferably deposited on a starting sheet, using a diaphragm cell. The deposit is smooth and free from "berries." The electrolyte may contain sulphate radicals but must be free from reducible sulphur compounds. In examples, a thin nickel starting sheet is used as cathode in an electrolyte containing ions of nickel, chloride and sulphate with smaller amounts of sodium and boric acid ion. Traces of Ca, Cu and Pb are present. To this 0.01 to 0.1 g. per litre of ethylene cyano hydrin are added, and electrolysis is effected at pH of 4, a temperature of 140 DEG F., and current density of 15 A.S.F., forming a coating of high purity nickel of 0.8 inch thick. Specification 569,444 and U.S.A. Specification 2,839,461 are referred to.
