Abstract
Nickel is produced by cathodic deposition at a cathode current density of 5 to 25 amps 1 sq. ft. from an aqueous bath at a temperature of 100 to 160 DEG F. containing nickel, a levelling agent chosen from coumarin and organic cyanides, and sulphur dioxide, selenous acid, tellurium dioxide, or hypophosphorous acid but no other brightening agent. Specified organic cyanides are the cyanohydrine of ethylene, acetaldehyde and acetone, cyanoacetic acid, Z-cyano-acetamide, acetonitrile, acrylonitrile, propionitrile, b -chloropropionitrile, benzonitrile, and p-aminophenyl-acetonitrile. The cathode deposits include small amounts of sulphur, selenium, tellurium or phosphorus depending on the brightener used and preferably contains at least 0.01% but less than 0.25% sulphur together with one of the other elements when compounds containing them are used. The cathodically deposited material formed on a nickel starting sheet is typically sheared into 1" square pieces and inserted in a titanium plating basket anode in a Watts - type bath.
