Abstract

An electrolyte is electrolysed in a cell comprising an anode compartment and a cathode compartment sepd. by a permeable diaphragm made of a material, partic. fluorinated polymer, which is non-wettable by the eelectrolyte. The electrolyte is fed continuously into one of the compartments and at least a part is made to percolate through the diaphragm to the other compartment by setting up a difference of pressure on the two sides of the diaphragm. Periodically, a momentary rise in the pressure difference is induced. This diaphragm cell can be worked for long periods with economic current density.
