[Class 35] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXVIII] In a torque-amplifying or follow-up mechanism (Group XXXVIII), two oscillating motors are used. Each motor comprises a permanent magnet armature 22 free to oscillate between the polepieces 32 of two electromagnet assemblies 37 and biassed to its mid-position of oscillation by resonant springs 33. Each electromagnet 37 has two limbs 36, 36a; each limb 36 carrying a coil 21 which is energized from an A.C. supply. Hence, the polarity of the polepieces 32 will alternate and the armature will tend to centre itself, first between one pair of opposed polepieces 32 and then between the other pair.
