Abstract

621,443. Door locks. MATTHEW, HARVEY, & CO., Ltd., and GREEN, H. Feb. 26, 1947, No. 5519. [Class 44] A lock for a vehicle door of the type in which the latch operating handle 12 has a sleeve 13 extending through an escutcheon plate 17 fixed to the door and adapted to be locked to it by the transverse bolt 20 of a lock 10 contained in the handle, has a cover plate 22 having two flat ears 23 mounted on the sleeve 13, the ears being adapted to cover the screws 9 which secure the escutcheon plate to the door. This prevents the lock being opened by removing the screws and turning the escutcheon plate with the handle. The sleeve is provided with a radial lug 15 to engage one of a number of slots 26 in the inturned boss portion 25 of the cover-plate. The escutcheon plate 17 has a boss 19 having a number of radial holes 21 in one of which the bolt 20 is adapted to engage. When the handle is unlocked it may be pulled outwardly against a spring 29 to disengage the lug 15 from the slot in the cover plate which may then be moved independently. When the handle is locked, this is prevented by the bolt 20 engaging the end of the hole 21. The lock number may be marked on the flanges of the escutcheon plate where it is normally obscured by the cover plate.
