Latches, sliding.-In latches for vehicle doors having a housing of the same interior crosssection as the latch bolt and secured in a cutaway part of the door by flanges, the securing flanges do not extend to the forward end of the housing so that upholstery can be more readily attached. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the spring latch bolt B slides in the housing A sunk into the door C. The housing has flanges A' for attaching by means of screws C<1>, the flanges not extending to the edge of the door, leaving the edge C<2> clear of metal so that nails or tacks can be inserted. The bolt is operated by a handle E pivoted by a screw F to the lower flange or the door and having a pin engaging a hole in the bolt. The housing is slotted at A<3> to allow movement of the pin, and a lug E<3> covers the slot to keep out dust. The whole of the casing except the slot A may be covered by upholstery, and the latch and its spring may be removed from the housing by removing the handle E. In the form shown in Fig. 4, additional readily detachable handles are provided. G<1> is the usual vertical handle detachably pivoted to the lower flange at G<2> and passing through upper and lower slots A<5> in the housing and engaging a vertical recess in the latch bolt. The exterior handle H is carried by a spindle H<1> turning in a bearing H<4> attached to the outer face of the door by screws, and a bearing A<6> in the inner face of the upper flange A'. By unscrewing the bearing H<4>, the handle H and its spindle H<1> and follower H<2> can be removed bodily, allowing the removal of the latch bolt. An arm J' turned by a square key fitting the boss J<1> can be turned into a recess in the lower face of the bolt to lock it against operation.
