Abstract
257,362. Beckett, Laycock & Watkinson, Ltd., and Bushnell, B. F. June 11, 1925. Latches, sliding, are arranged on the door of a motor vehicle so that the sliding glass panel extends practically the full width of the door, the latch being operated by inside and outside handles with connecting means extending round the nearest vertical edge of the glass panel. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the invention is described with respect to the type of fastening wherein a projection (not shown) on the door 10 enters a tapered socket 12 on the door post and is engaged by a sliding latch (not shown) entering a Lotch therein through a hole 11 in the socket. The latch is directly operated by the spindle 14 of the inside handle 15. The outside handle 18 turns on a spindle 19 and has an arm 27 engaging projections 25 on a plate 23 sliding vertically between the edge of the door and a cover plate 22. Similar projections 24 engage an arm 26 on the spindle 14, so that rotation of the handle 18 rotates the spindle 14 to operate the latch. Lost motion may be allowed so that operation of the handle 18 need not rotate the handle 15 in retracting the latch. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the spindle 32 of the outside handle again directly operates the latch 29. The inside handle 30 is mounted on a shaft 35 pivoted at 31 extending round the edge of the glass panel 33 and ending in a cranked part 36 rigidly connected to the operating spindle 32. In a further form, Fig. 5, the inside handle is pivoted on a spindle 37 passing in front of the glass panel, and having a rigid arm 40 for directly operating the latch by engaging a projection thereon. In another form, Fig. 7, the inside handle 45 is pivoted to operate a push-lever 50 to rock the arm 46, pivoted in front of the glass panel 44, to cause its end 48 to effect a direct withdrawal of the latch 43. Specification 214,392 is referred to.
