YFit; Q a sectional view, on the line im-2, oit Fig. l.
Figi'. 2l a lace view oi a modil'ied forni ol my invention.
This invention relates to improvement in latches for vehicle doors, and particularly to latches which are adapted to he operated from the inside hy a latch-holt operatingrlever` and from the outside hy a rotatable handle. ln the .more 0'eneral construction oft latches for `wehirle doors, the outside handle can only he turned in one direction, owing to the limited space within the latch casing. The object of this invention is to produce a latch for vehicle doors which may he open ated from the outside by turning the handle in either direction and which will not interfere with the sliding action oit the door window, and the invention consists in the construction as will he hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carryinp, out my invention, l employ a latch casing; 5, in which is mounted the usual latch-holt 6 proiecting` outward through the front face 7 oil the latch case. This holt is provided with an upwardly-projecting operatingerm 8 adapted to he turned by the movement of a double cam 9. This cam is usually operated from the outside by a handle-spindle, hutA in this construction I provide the cam with teeth l0 meshing with teeth 1l on a huh 12, which is mounted forward of the cam and is adapted to he turned "0 by a spindle 13 of a handle from the outside oi the door, not shown hut ot usual construetion. Preferably, the latch-holt is adapted to he operated From the inside of a door 'oy a lever which, in this case, is a vertically- Serial No. 57i-,446i
arranged lever lt, provided at its upper end with a handle l5, and, in order to loclr the holt against retraction, l provide a locking;- dei,y 16, provided at its lower end with a notch li' to engage with a lug` ,ld projecting upward from the upper end olI the cam 9. This dogg is adapted to be depressed by a push-button 19 mounted in the handle l5 and connected with a sleeve 20, which hears upon the upper end oir' the dog. rlhe dog` is provided at its rear end with a canrtace 2l to be engaged hy a pin E32 in the spindle let, so that, when the spindle is turned to retire the holt, the dop,` will i'irst he lit'ted out of engagement with the cam 9. The usual rollback 23 of a pin tumbler lock may he provided to engage with the dog 16 to lock the dog;- in its closed position :troni the outside ot the door, this being a common arrangement in locks ot' this type.
instead ot employing the dog` 16 for locking the cam 9, the cam may loe provided in its upper end with a notch 9d, to he engaged hy a pin 25 at the upper end of a slide 26, which is adapted to he locked in place by the roll-hack 27 of the usual pin tumbler lock, which is operated 'from the outside ot the door. This slide 26 has an upwardly-extendine` handle 28 hy which the slide 2G may he moved into or out of engagement with the cam when it is not locked from the outside.
its in the construction first described, the cani 9 has the same teeth l0 engaging with teeth lvl. on the huh l2, and the holt is adapt-- ed to he operated hy a rotary or other spin dle 29. lith this construction, the holt may he operated troni the outside ont a door by turning the handle in either direction and does not intericre with the movement el a lwindow in the door.
l claim:
l. A latch tor vehicle doors, comprisingn a holt having an operating arm, a cam mounted in the casing and adapted to move the arm when turned in either direction, the said cam formed with teeth, and a huh mounted in the case 'forward ot the said cam and provided with teeth meshing with the teeth on said cam and adapted to he turned hy a handle-spindle.
A latch ttor vehicle doors, comprising a bolt havin g an operating arm, a cam mounted in the casina' and adapted to'inove the arm when turned in either direction, the said (lll cam formed with teeth, a hub mounted in the case forward of the said cam and provided With teeth meshing with the teeth on said' caln vand adapted to be'tu'rned by a handle-spindle, and means for looking the Cam lgfainst movement by the handlespndle.
In testimony whereof, I have signed tlm specification in the presence ottwo sul. sol'ibing witnesses.y
