The iii'vention has for an object the provision of a novel door handle having a k ey operatedlock mounted therein for actuating means to permitfree rotation of said handle when in locked position.
Another object of the. invention resides in the provision of a novel locking door handle requiring but few parts and which is, therefore, capable of being manufactured at low cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel locking door handle which is positive in operation and which, when locked, cannot be rendered operative .by unauthorized tampering therewith.
-Another object of the invention resides in a provision of a locking door handle having novel means therein for preventing its Withdrawal from the door. p These and such other objects of the invention as will be more readily understood from a perusal of the following specification, are attained by providing a novel locking door The present Ihandle having key-operated means therein to actuate means for rendering the handle inoperative, said handle being free to\rotate without actuating the latch, associated therewith, when locked. The provision of the novel means forppermitting the handle to rotate eliminates the possibility of the latch being forced by unauthorized persons.

The improved locking door handle preferably comprises a tubular stem- 11 having 'a cross bar 12 rigidly securedy on one end thereof to form a handle. Rigidly secured within the vstem 11 and extending beyond the end housing 13 of small diameter having a pair of parallel arms or extensions 14 extending therefrom. A shank 15, preferably square in cross section, is rigidly mounted between the spaced parallel arms 14, .and extends beyond the end of said arms.v A centrally located recess 16 end of the shank 15 which is adapted to receive therein the reduced end 17 of a shank extension 18. reduced portion 17 is provided with an annular flange n ear its end to permit the two shank members 15 and 18 to be rotatably secured togetherby a retaining pin 10.
Thelocking door handle assembly thus provided is inserted into a hole 21 provided therefore in the vehicle door frame 22. suitable bearing `is. provided for the handle by the provision-of an escutcheon plate 23 which encircles the tubular stem 13v and is secured to the door frame 22 by means of screws 24. The rotatable extension 18 on the shank 15 is adapted to engage in a recess provided in a latch actuating means 25 mounted for rotation in the latch housing 26, which houstaken on line 5-5 This ing is carried on the inner side. of the vehicle door, as shown.
The latch mechanism mounted within this housing is of the usual construction, the latch actuating means 25 having portion thereof engaging in a latch 27, whereby upon actua- .tion of. the former said latch is withdrawn members. This means comprises collar orA sleeve 32 slidably mounted on the square shank 15, said collar normally extending'beyondi the end of `the shank 15 and over a portion of the extensiony 18. To lock the vehicle door the locking door handle is rendered inoperative' by withdrawal of the sleeve 32 from engagement with the rotatable extension 18. To this end key-operated means 33, of any suitable construction, is securely mounted within the tubular stem 13,. said key-operated means having an eccentric 34 on the innermost end of its rotatable Abarrel portion 35. Pivotally mounted between the arms 14 and hav-f ing a portion thereof extend outwardly ,beyond one side of sald arms, 1s a lever arm 36, havmg operatlve engagement with the eccentric 34. The lever arm 36 and the sleeve 32 are operatively connected by a link 37,
said link preferably comprising a substantially U-sliaped wire frame having its bent end pivotally secured in the link 37 and having its free ends bent inwardly to engage in suitable sockets provided therefor in opposite sides of the sleeve 32.
Upon manipulation of the key-operated means to lock the door, the lever arm 36 is moved on its pivot, due to its engagement with the eccentric 34; to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig.` 3, said movement withdrawing the sleeve 32 from engagement with the rotatable shank portion 18. With the parts of the door locking handle in this position, said handle may be freely rotated without actuating the latch 27. To render the door locking handle operative the key-operated means is further manipulated to move the lever arm 36 to its former position thereby again sliding the sleeve 32 over `the rotatable shank portion 18.
To insure proper positioning of the vdoor Aactuating means. .taining the locking handle in position is prohandle 12 when same is rendered operative, suitable pins 39 are provided on the extension 18 adapted to be engaged by cooperating slots 41 provided therefor on the forward edge of the sleeve 32. These pins also insure the rigid connection between two members, as a considerable amount of strain is taken up thereby, to prevent the squared opening within the sleeve 32 from becoming rounded.
To prevent withdrawal of the locking door handle 12 from the vehicle door, automatic retaining means is provided in the shank eX- tension 18 for engaging the latch actuating means 24. This means preferably comprises a pair of pawls 42, which pawls are pivotally mounted'in suitable recesses provided therefor in said shank portion. Hook port-ions 43 are provided on the outer ends of the pawls 42 and a compression spring 44 is interposed therebetween, an opening being provided therefor in the body of said shank.

In the modiiied form of the invention, as shown in Fig. 7, the barrel 35a of the keyoperated means 33a is provided with worm thread 49. A collar 51 is slidingly mounted within the tubular stem 13a, of the handle, and is provided with internal threads for cooperation with the threads on the barrel 35a. Slots 52 are provided in the wall of the tubular stem 13a to permit the oppositely disposed pintle extensions 53, of the collar 51,
to extend therethrough, each pintle extension having a link 54 pivotallymounted thereon, which links have their opposite ends engaging in the collar 32a. f

Construction of the door locking handles of the types disclosed is extremely simple,
they employing but a few parts which may now commonly employed the handle is liable to become disengaged therefrom due to vibration of the vehicle loosening the retainingy means. When in operative position the door hand-le is rigidly connected with the latch operating means and when in locked position 'said handle is free to rotate, thus preventing the latch from being forcibly actuated.
It is to be understood that while only exemplary forms of the present invention have beendisclosed in the foregoing description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, said invention is capable of embodying modifications in detail structure without del parting from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

A door handle rotatably mounted in a door, comprising, a stem having key-operated means mounted therein; a` lever arm pivotally mounted in said stem for actuation by said key-operated means; a shank carried by said stem having a .rotatable extension adapted to engage in latch actuating means mounted in said door; and means operatively associated with the lever arm to render the rotatable extension rigid to permit actuation of the latch actuating means upon manipulation of the rdo'or handle.
7. The combination with a door having latch means mounted on the inside face vthereof and having an opening extending therethrough to receive 4a door handle, said door handle having a shank for engaging in said latch means; means pivotally mounted in said shank yieldingly engaging said latch means to prevent withdrawal of the handle from the door; and key operated means in said'handle to permit manipulation of the latter without operating said latch mea-ns.
