Abstract

620,633. Electromagnetic relays. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and TERRY, V. J. Jan. 24, 1947, No. 2282. [Class 38(v)] In a telegraphic relay in which two contacts carried by the armature are respectively brought into engagement with two fixed contacts according to the direction of movement of the armature, the two moving contacts and/or the two fixed contacts are mounted on a res'ilientlysupported rigid member so that one pair of contacts engages, the " give " of the resilient support causes a more rapid separation of the other pair. In the form shown in Fig 1, an extension 5 of the armature, which moves in the diredtion of the arrows 6, carries, by means of a rubber bush 8, a rigid member 1 bearing the movable contacts 2, 3 co-operating respectively with fixed contacts 9, 10. The arrangement may be modified so that the plane containing the contact faces 2, 3 and the axis 4 is not perpendicular to the direction of movement of the armature, thereby causing sliding of the contacts over each other, which further tends to diminish " chattering." In a further modification, Fig. 2, (not shown), the moving contacts are mounted on a spring blade which twists when the contacts engage and spring tongues engaging the moving parts provide friction to stop " chattering." In Fig. 3 it is the fixed contacts 23, 24 that are mounted on a rigid rod 26 which can rotate about its axis against bearing springs 28 and the armature causes an arm 20 carrying the moving contacts 21, 22 to rotate one way or the other about the spindle 29.
