Abstract
765,256. Electromagnetic relays. FLIGUE, W. DE. Feb. 16, 1955 [Feb. 17, 1954], No. 4696/55. Class 38(5) A relay armature 5 pivots about a knife edge la at the end of one limb 1b of a U- shaped magnet yoke 1, when a coil 3 surrounding a centrally-disposed core 2 is energized, a permanent magnet 6 (or spring) mounted on the yoke 1 returning the armature on de-energization of the coil. The armature carries on each side depending insulating arms 7b situated mid-way between the yoke limbs, each limb carrying a pair of contact blades 20 co-operating with a pair of adjustable screw-threaded contact studs 22. To ensure simultaneous making of the contacts at both sides of the armature, the armature additionally rotates about a vertical axis formed by a rod 11 fixed to the limb lb of the yoke, a ball 13 on the rod co-operating with an armature recess 12; thus, should one pair of contacts engage first, the armature will pivot about the rod 11 and the other pair will immediately close. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the ball 13 is replaced by a ball race. Connection to each pair of blades 20 is made by a flexible connector 30 fixed to the arms 7b, the connector limb 30a being held between the cranked ends 20a of the blades 20, and the limb 30b being connected to a terminal 27. A modified connector (Fig. 8, not shown), includes a double spiral to minimize the restraining action on the armature. A further permanent magnet 28 may be mounted on the yoke 1 to latch the armature in the position to which it is moved by the coil 3, manual or other means being required to reset the armature.
