Abstract

620,186. Two-part couplings. TUCKER & CO:, Ltd., J. H., and AVISON, R. G. Jan. 7, 1947, No. 489. [Class 38 (i)] A socket coupling has a sliding shutter which interlocks with the cover plate. The T-shaped shutter d, Fig. 4, has a cross-piece d<SP>1</SP> to mask the apertures b<SP>2</SP> in the cover plate b, a slot d<SP>5</SP> for the passage of a screw f on a metal bracket g, which holds the shutter in loose sliding relationship to the cover plate, a projection d<SP>4</SP> which may interlock in a recess b<SP>3</SP> in the cover plate, and a tail piece d<SP>3</SP> having a sloping top surface d<SP>2</SP>. A spring e is placed in compression between the wall of a recess in the socket base c and the inclined rear face of the tail d<SP>3</SP> so as to maintain the shutter in the closed position, Fig. 2. When a plug having rectangular pins a<SP>1</SP>, a is inserted into the socket, the earth pin a bears on the sloping surface d<SP>2</SP> and at first depresses the shutter slightly to disengage the projection d<SP>4</SP> and then forces the shutter to move longitudinally to uncover the slots b<SP>2</SP> to permit entry of the pins A<SP>1</SP>.
