Abstract

619,575. Turning. HERBERT, Ltd., A., LLOYD, A. H., and EATOUGH, C. Dec. 13, 1946, No. 36797. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe has means by which the rate of feed can be periodically varied to produce local reductions in the thickness of the cutting so that the latter breaks into short lengths. In the embodiment described the means comprises a spring-biassed clutch in the feed mechanism. A sleeve 22 is keyed to the driven shaft 20 of the feed mechanism and slidably splined with a dogclutch member 23 having teeth 26 held in engagement with corresponding teeth on the driving member 19 by a spring 24. A recess 31 is formed in the dog-clutch member to receive a glut (not shown) pivotally mounted on a handle 14 for disengaging the clutch. The handle may have a flexible connection with a hand-grip portion which can be held by the operator. Clutches of the conical or plate type may be used.
