444,097. Screwing ; turning. PITTLER WERKZEUGMASCHINEN - FABRIK AKT.- GES., Wahren, Leipsic, Germany. Aug. 7, 1935, No. 22306. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1934. [Class 83 (iii)] [See also Group XXIV] Clutch - operating mechanism.-In an automatic lathe, the spindle 17 which carries the screwing tool is movable axially for performing the screwing operation and has splined thereon a clutch part 16 operated by a yoke ring 15 and engageable with a driven clutch member 21. The yoke 14 for operating the ring 15 is secured to a shaft 13 carrying a second lever 12 provided with a fork 11. A lever 5, freely pivoted on the shaft 13, carries a pin 10 lying within the fork 11 and also a roller 4 engageable with the inclined surface of a cam 3 on a continuously rotating drum 2. When the cam displaces the lever 5 to the left in the Figure the pin 10 travels across the fork 11 and imparts a blow to the lever 12 so as to engage the clutch 16, 21 rapidly, a detent 7 on a lever 8 being urged by a spring 20 behind a detent 6 on the lever 5 to hold the clutch in the engaged position. At the termination of the screwing operation a member 22 moving in unison with the spindle 17 engages a surface d on the lever 8 to depress the detent 7 and allow a spring plunger 9 to rock the lever 5, the pin 10 again travelling across the fork 11 to deliver a blow to the lever 12 and disengage the clutch rapidly.
