Abstract

618,494. Practice and indicator bombs fuzes. LINDMAN, E. I. April 21, 1942, No. 5347. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1940. [Class 9 (i)] [Also in Group V] A practice or indicator bomb is made of concrete in which the aggregate is a granular mass which has a specific gravity greater than 3 and the grains of which pass through a 7 mm. screen. The aggregate may be granulated iron or lead or metallifereous ore. Granite, gneiss, sand, concrete clinker, or pumice may be added. The bomb may be made in two parts 1, 3, Fig. 1, and may be cast in a vertical mould, the part 1 being allowed to solidify before the part 3 is poured in. Alternatively, the part 3 may be made separately and secured to the part 1 by mortar. The part 3 may be of lighter concrete than the part 1. The last part of the bomb to be cast may pass to or near the centre of gravity of the bomb through a channel made around a central tube 2 which is to contain a smoke-forming charge or a light-emitting charge or both. The charge may be ignited by direct shock action, a primer or fuze, or an expelling charge, an impact firing pin secured to a plate 11 being used for this purpose ; a cap 12 protects the plate during transport. Iron members 4, 5, having threaded holes 6, are laid in the concrete during casting ; the holes 6 are to receive eyes or hooks by which the bomb is hung. A metal cone 9 encloses the part 3. Tail vanes 7 may be secured to the tube 2 or cast into the concrete. An iron ring 8 stays the vanes. The bomb may be coated with paraffin wax in solution in benzene. In a modification the tube 2 contains another tube filled with. a smoke-forming &c. charge, and the nose of the bomb has an eye for hanging the bomb vertically in the aeroplane. Specifications 618,495 and 618,496 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 contains also the subject-matter of Specifications 618,495 and 618,496, and includes Figs. 4 and 4a (Cancelled), which show a percussion fuze comprising a firing pin 10 secured to a plate 11, a safety pin having an ejector spring 30 and a hole 24 for a safety wire to be secured to the aeroplane, and a safety cap 12 for use during transport. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
